Kitchen furniture: recommended dimensions and distances
The kitchen is a very popular and, therefore, a very dynamic space. This requires a lot of attention when about furniture positioning and the correct determination of the distances between the furniture pieces, in order to get freedom of movement and also to avoid possible accidents.
That is why on site measurements and calculus, you have to take into account the kitchen area, its shape and details (square, rectangular, small, large with 1 or 2 doors), as well as the triangle rule: the cooking area (hob or cooker), the food preparation area (sink) and storage area (refrigerator/cabinets). Here you’ll find the recommended dimension for furniture and the distances that one should keep in mind when does the installation.
Suspended furniture vs. floor furniture bodies
There are particular situations when non-standard sizes are preferred for furniture items, but in most kitchens, suspended cabinets have a depth of 30 cm and the bottom ones of 63 cm. The distance between the top and bottom furniture should be 38-45 cm. The recommended height of the cabinets and the sink from the floor is 91 cm.
Please, note! The thickness of the worktop is taken into account in the total height of the ground cabinet. If you choose to replace, for example, an old countertop with a new solid wood kitchen countertop, you should ensure, as much as possible, that the new top has the same thickness as the old one.
The kitchen island
The height of the island is also chosen taking into account its use. For example, if it is used as a worktop, then the kitchen island must have the same height as the floor cabinet (90-92 cm). Whatever its use, the height of the island should not exceed 100 cm.
Tables and chairs
For a correct and comfortable position, the kitchen table should have a height of 71-75 cm and the seats 45 cm. Ideally, the seat depth/width of the chairs should be between 45 and 50 cm.
Furniture vs. appliances
If household appliances are to be incorporated in the kitchen furniture, their position must be established in advance so as to allow for a smooth running of activities and also meet the requirements of furniture and home appliance manufacturers. For example, between the hob and the hood (bottom), it is advisable to have a minimum distance of 60 cm but not more than 90. In the case of a microwave oven, a height of 1.40 m is recommended, for to be accessible for both adults and children.
Sink vs. appliances
Many kitchens have a washing machine and dishwasher incorporated in the furniture. If you are interested in this option, calculate their position so that there is a maximum distance of 90 cm between sink and washing machine vs. dishwasher.
