9 November 2018Kitchen furniture: recommended sizes and spaces among them
Spending much time into the kitchen is trendy nowadays and, therefore, it becomes a very dynamic space. That is why it requires much care regarding the furniture positioning and the correct determination of the distances between the furniture pieces to get enough free space to move around and also a functional space.
When you arrange the kitchen furniture, you have to consider the total kitchen area, the shape, and details like (square, rectangular, with one or two doors), as well as the triangle rule: the cooking area, the food preparation area, and the storage area. Here you will find the recommended dimension for furniture and the distances that one should keep in mind when does the installation.
Hanging furniture vs. floor furniture
There are particular situations when non-standard sizes are preferred as furniture items, but in most kitchens, hanging cabinets have a depth of 30 cm, and the extent of the bottom ones is 63 cm. The distance between the top and bottom furniture should be 38-45 cm. The recommended height of the cabinets and the sink from the floor is 91 cm.
Please note that the thickness of the worktop is taken into account in the cabinet’s total height. If you want to replace an old countertop with a new hardwood kitchen countertop, you should make sure, as much as possible, that the new top has the same thickness as the old one.
The kitchen island
The height of the island is chosen, having into the account its use. For instance, if used as a worktop, the kitchen island must have the same height as the floor cabinet (90-92 cm). Whatever its use is, the height of the island should not exceed 100 cm.
The tables and chairs
For a correct and comfortable position, the kitchen table should have a height of 71-75 cm, and the seats have to be 45 cm high. Ideally, the seat depth/width of the chairs should be between 45 and 50 cm.
Furniture vs. appliances
If household appliances are held into the kitchen furniture, their position must be established to allow for a smooth running of activities and meet the requirements of furniture and home appliance manufacturers. For example, between the hob and the hood (bottom), it is advisable to have a minimum distance of 60 cm but not more than 90. In the case of a microwave oven, a height of 1.40 m is recommended to be accessible for adults and children.
Sink vs. appliances
Most of the kitchens have a washing machine and dishwasher incorporated into the furniture. If you are bond to this option, assess their position to have a maximum distance of 90 cm between the sink and washing machine vs. dishwasher.
